Infant Neck Stretches to Improve Breastfeeding

Stretching your baby’s neck can help improve flexibility and range of motion. This guide offers creative ways to perform rotation and lateral flexion stretches safely, whether on a table or holding your baby.

Rotation Stretch:

  1. On a Table:
    • Cup the baby’s head and gently rotate it to one side.
    • Hold down the opposite shoulder to increase the stretch.
    • Hold for 20 seconds if the baby is comfortable.
  2. In Your Arms:
    • Support the head and rotate it while cradling your baby.
    • Use gentle bouncing to keep them relaxed during the stretch.

Lateral Flexion Stretch (Ear to Shoulder):

  1. On a Table:
    • Cup the back of the head and tilt the baby’s ear toward the shoulder.
    • Apply light pressure on the opposite shoulder for more stretch.
  2. While Holding Baby:
    • Gently move the baby’s body while tilting their head to mimic the table stretch.
    • Incorporate playful movement to keep the baby engaged.

Flexibility and Adaptability:

  • There isn’t a single “right way” to stretch. Feel free to adjust based on what’s comfortable for your baby.
  • If the baby resists, wait and reintroduce the stretch later.
  • The goal is to enhance neck mobility through rotation or lateral flexion, whether on a surface or in your arms.

These stretches promote healthy movement patterns and bonding time. Always prioritize your baby’s comfort and follow their cues during these stretches.
